I am a patient advocate for phage therapy fighting AMR and superbugs
AMR is one of the leading causes of deaths worldwide. Had I not received a personalized phage treatment, I would not be here today to share my story with the world, to inspire patients and doctors alike to consider and use phage therapy. My story is more than an inspiration of resilience, it is a plea for concret change in medicine. Every day patients die from an AMR infection. I could have been one of those patients.
My story behind phages - a miracle drug
When classical medicine - antibiotics - failed to save me after being administered them for 2 years, it was high time to persuade my doctors to try something else. I say 'failed to save me'; a prolonged and heavy dose of antibiotics was actually slowly killing me....
Obtaining bacteriophages was literally a 'mission impossible' but determination and persistency prevailed. Bacteriophages is what ultimately saved me from a serious infection by the name of Klebsiella pneumoniae and a long and arduous hospitalisation.
I never thought that I would one day leave the hospital...
It is high time that doctors, hospitals and regulators and academia consider using bacteriophages on infected patients in an AMR context.
I believe it is my mission to 'give back' to those who made my miracle happen in speaking up and aloud on phage therapy where it can save many more lives.
Eyes closed, I call them a miracle drug.
